Same phrase, different machine
Standard food noise, the kind described in the food noise pillar, is appetite signaling stuck in a loop: reward circuits and hunger hormones negotiating out loud. The ADHD version overlaps but runs on an extra engine: a brain that under-produces its own stimulation and has learned that food is the fastest dopamine dispenser in the house. That is why it spikes during boredom, why one specific exciting food dominates the loop while a healthy substitute feels insulting, and why the noise can disappear entirely during hyperfocus and then ambush you at the transition out of it.
Two more ADHD mechanics make it worse. Interoception, the reading of internal body signals, tends to run quiet, so hunger is easy to miss until it is ravenous and urgent, which feels indistinguishable from noise. And executive function is exactly the resource that meal planning, grocery shopping and cooking consume, so the structure that would quiet the noise is the structure that is hardest to build.
The stimulant timing trap
For people on stimulant medication the day has a shape worth naming. Morning and afternoon: appetite suppressed, meals skipped or forgotten, an energy deficit quietly building. Evening: the medication fades, the deficit comes due, and the reward system comes back online, all at once. The result reads as a willowy eater by day and a different person at night, and it gets misfiled as a character problem when it is substantially arithmetic. The fix is unromantic: food went in late, so put it in early, on a schedule, whether or not it sounds appealing at the time.
The single highest-leverage move for the evening rebound is to stop fighting it and schedule it: a planned, protein-forward evening snack that you chose in the morning. The rebound lands on something with a floor under it instead of on whatever the scroll surfaces at 9:40pm. Fighting a predictable wave every night loses; giving it a designated place to land mostly works.
Tactics that fit the brain you have
- Eat by the clock, not by cues. If interoception is unreliable, hunger is a bad scheduler. Three anchored meals at set times, with alarms if alarms are what works, removes the decision entirely.
- Protein during the suppressed window. Even when food is boring at noon, 30g of protein then is what turns the 9pm volume down. A shake counts; the protein calculator gives the daily floor.
- Friction asymmetry. The exciting foods live somewhere annoying to reach; the acceptable ones sit at eye level, prepped. You are not resisting more, you are making the impulsive path slower than the fine path.
- Stimulation substitution. Since much of the noise is a stimulation request mislabeled as a food request, keep two or three fast non-food dopamine options genuinely available for the boredom window: the walk, the game, the call.
- Externalize the pattern. ADHD brains are bad at noticing their own trends and good at responding to visible data. Logging the loud moments and what preceded them turns a shame spiral into a pattern you can engineer around.
Where the medications fit
